(circa 14 days per year for a two-year term)

Annual remuneration of £2,800 (plus reasonable travel expenses for two meetings per year)

Midwives is the award-winning membership magazine of the Royal College of Midwives (RCM). It is highly regarded by midwives as the voice of the profession and is valued for its range of practical and research content. It achieves a balance of appealing to, and being relevant to, a large membership that ranges in professional experience from students to senior managers and maternity support workers (MSWs).

From March 2019, Midwives will be published bi-monthly (six times per year).

Redactive Media Group, the RCM’s official publishing agency, is looking for a new Professional Editor to help ensure the clinical and technical accuracy of content of the next generation of Midwives. This important role will be effective from early 2019.

Overview

The Professional Editor will review and write specialist articles that explain complex topics or concepts to our audience of midwives. He or she will support the magazine’s Editor in ensuring copy is accurate and appropriate. They will also advise on the right level of complexity (language and content) for the audience.

The Professional Editor:

  • will verify the clinical or technical accuracy of magazine content
  • must be well versed (on a clinical level) in midwifery. They may need to re-purpose raw and in-depth clinical data/information for the audience
  • will act as a sounding board for the Editor
  • will have awareness of the midwifery evidence base and how it should be interpreted
  • will also be aware of new developments in midwifery.

Specific responsibilities

Guiding content

  • Attending and contributing to editorial board meetings four times a year (two physical and two virtual).

Reviewing content

Approximately two days of reviewing and feedback per bi-monthly publishing cycle:    

  • Reviewing features plan for the magazine
  • Reviewing digital content plan
  • Reviewing synopses for individual features and pieces
  • General support for the Editor
  • Review some pieces, once written, for clinical accuracy
  • Ensuring that articles adhere to the midwifery evidence base.

Writing

  • One expert column per quarterly edition of the magazine (approx. 600 words), topic/scope tbc.   
  • One expert piece per quarter for digital content hub (approx. 450 words), topic/scope tbc and may vary in style/format from month to month.

Person specification

  • Experienced midwife with demonstrable extensive knowledge of the profession and evidence based research
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Can work remotely and flexibly (in terms of turnaround time) and be available as a sounding board for the Editor
  • Ability to attend two meetings each year in person and two per year via conference call allowing a half a day for each.
