Midwives – the magazine of the Royal College of Midwives (RCM)

Midwives is the award-winning membership magazine of the Royal College of Midwives (RCM). It is highly regarded by midwives as the voice of the profession and is valued for its range of practical and research content. It achieves a balance of appealing to, and being relevant to, a large membership that ranges in professional experience from students to senior managers and maternity support workers (MSWs).

Published bi-monthly (six times per year) and distributed to over 47,000 midwifery professionals who form the membership of RCM, the magazine content is also distributed via the RCM’s website, e-newsletters and social media channels.

Redactive Media Group has published the magazine for over 10 years and is searching for a new editor to help us deliver the next generation of Midwives. This exciting role will involve devising and implementing a new content structure and design for the magazine to launch in March 2019.

The successful candidate will work closely with the RCM and an appointed editorial board to shape and produce content plans for print magazine, digital, e-mail communications and other channels as necessary.

Other responsibilities will include:

  • Creating, commissioning and curating content for publication
  • Guiding the magazine’s designer and picture department on layout, choice of images and managing the sub-editing process
  • Effective liaison with the advertising sales team to support revenue generation
  • The creation and distribution of digital content

Your success will be measured by the performance of Midwives in delivering content that members value and achieves the communication objectives of the RCM.

The successful candidate will possess:

  • Extensive midwifery or knowledge in an equivalent health-related field with transferrable expertise and an understanding of the role of the midwife
  • An understanding of RCM, its mission and its initiatives
  • Excellent journalistic skills (degree level or equivalent) and proven experience as an editor with immaculate attention to detail
  • Strong client management ability and instincts
  • Hands on experience with MS Office and InDesign
  • Proven ability and knowledge of effective digital publishing, SEO and social media best practice
  • Creativity, innovation and a vision for developing media brands
